Ring mounts vs wall mounts for Autodarts: which should you buy?

Autodarts cameras have to hold position around your board, and there are two ways to do it: mounts that clip onto the light ring around the board, or arms screwed directly into the wall. Both can score accurately. The right one depends on your wall, your ring and how permanent you want the install to be.

We sell ring mounts, so read this knowing that — but the trade-offs below are the same ones we would give you across the bar.

Wall-mounted arms: maximum rigidity, maximum commitment

Arms fixed to the wall are independent of everything else: the board can be swapped, the ring can be adjusted, and the cameras do not move. That rigidity is the gold standard for calibration stability — once set, there is very little that can shift.

The cost is the install. You are drilling multiple fixings into the wall around the board, positioning each arm by eye, and living with the holes if you ever move the setup. In a rented flat or on a plasterboard wall, that is a real barrier.

Ring mounts: printed for the ring, on in minutes

Ring mounts clip the cameras to the light ring you already have around the board. No drilling, nothing permanent, and the whole camera array comes off in a minute if you move house or take the setup to a mate’s. For renters, stand-mounted boards, and anyone not ready to put six holes in the wall, they are the practical choice.

The honest catch: a ring mount is only as stable as the ring it grips. Generic one-size mounts on a loosely-fitting ring are where the "ring mounts drift" reputation comes from. It is why we print ours per ring model — Mission Torus 270, Winmau, and the Target Corona stand — so the fit is snug on the exact profile of your ring rather than approximately right for all of them.

A well-fitted ring mount on a solidly-hung ring holds calibration fine in normal home use. If the board takes a knock, recalibrate — it takes a minute, and that advice applies to wall arms too.

How to decide

  • Own wall, permanent darts corner, happy to drill: wall arms are the most set-and-forget option
  • Renting, plasterboard, or might rearrange the room: ring mounts
  • Stand-mounted board (e.g. Target Corona stand): ring/stand mounts — arms have no wall to live on
  • Not sure Autodarts is for you yet: ring mounts — try it without committing the wall, the cameras move to arms later if you upgrade

The part that matters more than the mount

Camera position and lighting decide your accuracy long before mount style does. Three cameras at even spacing, a full view of the board, even ring light and a proper calibration will outperform a badly-positioned wall-arm setup every time. Whichever mount you choose, spend your care there — our accuracy guide covers the lot.

Are ring mounts as stable as wall mounts for Autodarts?
Wall arms are the more rigid option in principle — they are independent of the board and the ring, so very little can shift them. A well-fitted ring mount on a solidly-hung ring holds calibration fine in normal home use. The failure case is a generic one-size mount on a loosely-fitting ring, which is where the reputation for drift comes from.
Do you need to drill holes to set up Autodarts?
No. Ring mounts clip the cameras to the light ring already around your board, so nothing is permanent and the whole camera array comes off in a minute. Wall-mounted arms do need drilling — several fixings around the board — which is the trade-off for their rigidity.
Will Autodarts ring mounts fit my light ring?
Only if they are cut for it. We print ours per ring model — Mission Torus 270, Winmau, and the Target Corona stand — so the fit is snug on that exact profile rather than approximately right for all of them. Check which ring you own before buying any mount.
Can you use Autodarts with a dartboard stand?
Yes. A stand-mounted board is one of the clearest cases for ring or stand mounts, because wall arms have no wall to live on. We cut a mount kit specifically for the Target Corona stand.
Which mount should you choose if you are renting?
Ring mounts. They need no drilling, leave no holes, and lift off in a minute if you move. They are also the low-commitment way to find out whether you want a permanent setup at all — the cameras can move to wall arms later.
